This week, the House voted to repeal DC's sanctuary city provisions – meanwhile, Mayor Bowser's 2026 budget proposal is taking aim at our sanctuary protections on the local level. As the The Council of the District of Columbia considers the proposed budget, and the federal bill moves to the Senate for a vote, we are reminded of words from Immigration Staff Attorney Ariana Smith at a local budget hearing earlier this month: "Repealing D.C’s Sanctuary Values Act will further isolate and endanger immigrant communities. Instilling fear of police interaction within a community that is uniquely vulnerable to crime will not further public safety." These attempts to destroy D.C.'s sanctuary provisions are not about public safety. In this moment, we ask you to speak out not only for our immigrant neighbors, but for the wellbeing of our entire city. DC RESIDENTS: Visit tinyurl.com/SaveDCBudget2025 to contact your councilmember about this and other harmful provisions in the 2026 budget proposal. To take action on the federal attempt to repeal DC's sanctuary city provisions, please stay tuned for action alerts from Ayuda and our advocacy partners to contact your state Senator next week before the vote. ... 📢 A Budget Reflects Our Values – And This One Falls Short.D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s recently proposed fiscal year 2026 (FY26) budget includes a range of cuts to the social safety net, which will disproportionately harm low-income immigrants. It even includes an attempt to roll back sanctuary city policies. These cuts aren’t just numbers — they’re life-altering decisions for our immigrant neighbors, families, and communities. The bottom line is clear: The D.C. Council must reject and remove these anti-immigrant proposals from the FY26 budget. 🛑 We must urge the D.C. Council to reject these anti-immigrant proposals.📣 Speak up, email or call your Council member today.📲 Not in D.C.?
